I do have firewalling set up, but I tried all of this after ipchains -F
(disabling firewalling).  
I've tried it with fewer servers.

ntpq does work.  Does ntpdate use (a) port(s) that ntpq doesn't, so maybe
my ISP might have started blocking something ?
