The faculty of teacher education offers programmes in education on all levels – undergraduate programmes, postgraduate programmes and Ph.D. programmes. The teacher training programme (undergraduate) is the umbrella programme for all teacher training courses at the university. The programme is highly flexible and trains teachers for all school stages. In addition to the teacher training programmes there are postgraduate programmes for professional development in special education and school development. The faculty also offers Ph.D. programmes in educational work, subject didactics and education.

Undergraduate programmes

Teacher training programme
The teacher training programme is the umbrella programme for all teaching training courses at the university. All types of teacher train within the pathways of the teacher training programme.

The programme is designed to allow for a high degree of flexibility. Students can choose among the pathways to create their own variation of the teacher training course. Depending on which courses the student takes, the programmes varies in length from 3 years to 5½ years. Upon completion of the teacher training programme, teachers are qualified to teach in one of the following school stages:

  1. Pre-school (ages 0-6)
  2. Primary and lower secondary school (ages 7-12)
  3. Secondary school teachers (ages 13-15)
  4. Upper Secondary school teachers (ages 16-19)
  5. Youth recreational work

The qualification obtained depends upon the courses taken within the programme. For pre-school and primary school teachers the length of the programme is at least 3 ½ years, for a secondary or upper secondary school teacher, the programme is at least 4 ½ years. The programme for teachers in vocational subjects is 3 years.

Admission to the programme is centred through a pathway. these pathways are:

  • Society, Environment and Nature
  • Mathematics and Sciences
  • Aesthetic communication
  • Physical Education, Leisure, Nutrition and Health
  • Subject studies
  • Vocational subjects
  • General entrance pathway

Career counselling programme
The career counselling programme prepares students for work as career counsellors in schools and adult education, as well as work in general career counselling at job centres. The programme leads to a Bachelor of Career Counselling.

Postgraduate programmes

The faculty of teacher education offers taught postgraduate programmes that further develop teachers’ skills and competencies. The Faculty offers the Graduate Diploma in Special Education that qualifies teachers to work with pupils with special needs. There are also programmes that prepare teachers for work in school development and for studies in Educational Work.

Graduate Diploma in Special Education
The programme aims to develop teacher’s knowledge and competencies to teach pupils with special needs.

M.Ed. school development
The programme aims to develop and competencies of teachers to work with research and development in school work.

M.Ed. Educational Research and Quality development
The programme is directed at teachers who want to further develop knowledge about learning, teaching and research and development activities in schools.
